Climate Change: politics that could kill you, part-3
Hello future scientists, I am your uncle globe, back with
the part 3 of our climate talk. Today I am going to tell you about the dirty
politics that worlds leaders are playing around the serious climate change
issue. Let’s start.
If you search information about the protests about climate change around the world you will find a new ward which is “Climate Justice”. What is Climate Justice? To understand Climate Justice, firstly you have to understand about “Climate Injustice”. Suppose, you are travelling in a bus and suddenly it hit’s another car the driver of the other car gets seriously injured. Now the police came and tells everyone who are inside the bus including you that all of you have to go to jail because you all hit the other driver, how would you feel? Isn’t it injustice to you and all the other passengers of the bus? Obviously it is. That is what happening in this climate change issue. If you do the maths acknowledging Nigeria, India, China, Germany, US as the emitters of carbon dioxide, you will find that, in all amount of the emitted carbon dioxide US has emitted almost 50%, Germany has emitted 27%, China has emitted 19%, and India, Nigeria has emitted only 5% and 3% CO2 in the atmosphere. But if you see the weather report you will find that India and Nigeria and other countries like them are facing more damages from floods, droughts, wildfire, tornedos, rise of sea level caused by the climate change. So people around the world are protesting against this damaging injustice. They are saying to the world leaders that, if you are not facing consequences, doesn’t mean that it’s not there, it is hurting people who are less responsible than you. Studies showed that global north (north side countries of every continent) has emitted 92% of total CO2 where most of Asia, Middle East, Africa and South America has emitted only 8%, but they are the one who are facing more damages than others. Same pattern is found in another study that shows, world’s 1% of rich society emits twice amount of CO2 than 50% of poor peoples around the world.
Now you can easily guess why climate change has become a political issue. Always remember, if there is any issue that slightly connected to the terms “Money” & “Power” then there is going to be a lot of politics. Back in 2016, the world leaders signed an agreement to slow down the rising temperature in atmosphere. It was called the “Paris Agreement”. But studies showed that three years after that agreement the global CO2 level is still rising up. Even after the study get published world’s biggest polluters like US, Russia, China and other have pulled themselves out from the agreement calling climate change is fake agenda against the big and rich countries. When US was under Republican rule, a Democratic senator Sheldon Whitehouse said “Talking to a republican senator about climate change is like talking to prisoners about escape, they look around…”. As we know, fossil fuel produces most number of CO2s, so, Oil companies, Coal energy companies, Car companies and almost every companies depending directly or indirectly on fossil fuel doesn’t want to face losses, so they try to pay govt. of almost every country, where they are selling their products, to keep govt.’s mouth shut about the climate change, so they can earn more. Govt. always takes that money because money is needed to be in power. So ultimately no actions are taken and situation is getting out of hand. Although there are some countries that are giving aid and direct money to some poor countries that they don’t cut trees which seems like an excuse from big countries to keep on emitting CO2. So we have to raise our voice against this dirty politics.
Ok friends, this is the end of our series about climate
change. Uncle Globe is signing off, be safe, good bye and see you soon.
